Here's what changed in 2026

If you've been following solar news, you've probably heard: the 30% federal tax credit for homeowners is gone.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025, let Section 25D — the Residential Clean Energy Credit — expire on December 31, 2025[6]. So if you're buying solar panels or a battery with cash or a loan in 2026, that 30% credit? It's not there anymore.

That stings. A $15,000 system that would've netted you $4,500 back on your taxes now costs the full $15,000. There's no getting around it — that's a real loss.

Prices vary by state. In Texas, the average works out to about $1,042/kWh, or roughly $14,067 for a typical 13.5 kWh install. California runs a bit higher, Florida a touch lower.

The 2026 reality: no more 30% federal credit

I want to be upfront about this because a lot of articles from 2024 and early 2025 still talk about the federal tax credit like it's around. It's not.

What happened: The Residential Clean Energy Credit under Section 25D expired on December 31, 2025[6]. If you buy a solar or battery system with cash or a loan in 2026, you get $0 from the federal government.

What still exists:

Commercial tax credits under Section 48E are still alive — up to 30-50% depending on bonus adders. But those only apply to commercial entities, not directly to homeowners.

Without the tax credit, the payback period stretches. How much? Let's be real about it.

If you care about ROI: A solar+storage system in Texas, saving about $100–150/month on electricity, would take 20+ years to pay for itself. That's not a great investment by itself.

But here's what changes the math:

  • Time-of-use rates. Some Texas retail electricity plans have peak rates triple or quadruple the off-peak rate. A battery lets you charge cheap and discharge during peak hours. That alone can save $500–$1,500 a year.
  • Blackout protection. After Winter Storm Uri in 2021, a lot of Texans realized the value of keeping the lights on when the grid goes down. How do you put a price on that?
